Billy Joel to Finish Madison Square Garden Residence in 2024


Billy Joel and Madison Square Garden Entertainment announced on Thursday that the singer will be ending her record-breaking career. residence in iconic New York venue In July 2024, after 10 years and around 150 concerts. The first of the last 10 concerts will take place on October 20, 2023.

Joel sold more than 1.6 million tickets during its run.

The announcement was made during a press conference at the venue that was attended by Joel, MSG CEO James Dolan, and New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

“There’s only one thing that’s more New York than Billy Joel, and that’s a Billy Joel concert at MSG,” said Mayor Adams. “For over 50 years, Billy’s music has defined our city and brought us together. On behalf of 8.5 million New Yorkers, congratulations on the historic sold-out show at MSG, Billy, and thank you for bringing a lifetime of joy to us all.”

“Billy Joel’s franchise run made history not just for Madison Square Garden, but for the music industry in general,” said Dolan. “The 150 sold-out lifetime show is a phenomenal success, and Billy’s exceptional talent speaks for his beloved catalog and loyal fan base. Billy always has a home at MSG even though his tenure ends with his 150th life performance.

Joel’s history with Madison Square Garden began with his debut in the arena on December 14, 1978, and his fifth solo album, “The Stranger”, brought him to superstardom. In 2006, with 12 consecutive performances, Joel broke the venue’s record for “most consecutive performances by any artist.” To commemorate the historic moment, a banner reading “Joel – 12” was hung from the Garden’s rafters, making him the city’s first entertainer to join the Knicks and Rangers NBA and NHL franchises.

In December 2013, Joel was named MSG’s first music franchise and began his residency in January 2014, with one show each month for “as long as demand continues” as he called it at the time. In January 2015, Joel broke his own record for most consecutive performances by any artist with the guesthouse’s 13th show. In July 2015, with his 65th lifetime show, Joel set another record for most lifetime performances by any artist. In July 2018, then-Governor Andrew M. Cuomo officially declared July 18, 2018, “Billy Joel Day” in New York State, to commemorate the 100th performance of his life at the venue. Bruce Springsteen joins Joel on stage to celebrate his 100th concert milestone.

The first of the last ten shows in Joel’s MSG franchise run will take place on October 20. Citi card members will have access to pre-sale tickets for the October 20 show for the first time through Monday, June 5 at 10:00 AM ET until Thursday, June 8. at 22:00 (ET). Verizon will also be offering a special pre-sale for the October show through its customer loyalty program Verizon Up. Members will have exclusive access to purchase pre-sale tickets from Tuesday, June 6 at 10:00AM (ET) to Thursday, June 8 at 10:00PM (ET).

Tickets will be available for purchase to the general public through Ticketmaster, starting at 10:00 AM ET on Friday, June 9th. Tickets will also be available at the Madison Square Garden box office on Saturday, June 10.
