Broadway’s ‘Some Like It Hot’, ‘Life of Pi’ Best Drama Desk Awards

Nobody is perfect butSome Like It Hot“It was close enough for the 67th anniversary Drama Desk Awardsawarded eight awards Wednesday to the Broadway adaptation of the classic movie comedy, including the outstanding musical. The most successful game “Life of Pileft with four awards.

Three Drama Desk Award winners each, including “A Doll’s House” and “Sweeney Todd.” two were connected by a pieceShucked,” “First Appearance,” “No More,” and “Leopoldstadt.”

The number of awards these productions received was often not directly related to which shows won for the top awards, only “Some Like It Hot” received wins both across the board and for the outstanding musical. The production of Tom Stoppard’s “Leopoldstadt” received only a couple of awards, one of which was for outstanding play. Meanwhile, “Life of Pi”, the highest-paid game among games, was not nominated for outstanding game.

In other high-level categories, “Piano Lesson” won an outstanding reenactment of a play, while “Parade” received an award for outstanding reenactment of a musical, the only awards these shows received.

The winners were announced in a press release Wednesday and will be announced on June 6 at a ceremony at Sardi’s. The Drama Desk Awards are voted on by critics, journalists, and theater-related broadcasters and include off-Broadway as well as Broadway productions. They usually provide a hint of what might be preferable. Tony’sIt happens on June 11 this year.

For the first time, this year’s acting nominees were gender neutral and two awards were given in each category to keep the total number of trophies the same. This meant that one of the 2023 Drama Desk winners, “Shucked’s” Alex Newell, who won for his outstanding performance in a musical, didn’t have to choose a gender category as they did for the Tonys. Newell, who isn’t a duo, is a candidate for a supporting role in a male-category musical on The Tonys, although the character in “Shucked” is a cis female.

Awards for the lead role in a play went to Jessica Chastain for “A Doll’s House” and Sean Hayes for “Good Night, Oscar”. On the musical side, the leading performance awards were given to Annaleigh Ashford for “Sweeney Todd” and to J. Harrison Ghee for “Some Like It Hot”.

Highlights in a musical went to the aforementioned Newell for “Shucked” and Kevin Del Aguila for “Some Like It Hot.” Highlights in one play were awarded to Miriam Silverman for “The Sign in Sydney Brustein’s Window” and Brandon Uranowitz for “Leopoldstadt”.

The directing awards went to Thomas Kail for “Sweeney Todd” and Max Webster for “Life of Pi.”

The Drama Desk Awards split the awards into music and lyrics, so both “Shucked” and “Some Like It Hot” won on their respective scores – Broadway newcomers Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally for the former team, and veteran duo Scott Wittman for the latter. Marc Shaiman. (The Tonys who keep it in one category won’t be able to spread much love.)
