Catherine, Princess of Wales, made a surprise appearance at the opening. Eurovision Song ContestOn Saturday evening, Andrew Lloyd-Webber, rapper Ms Banks and Kalush Orchestra, winner of last year’s Eurovisionwho hails from Ukraine.
The princess, who is married to Prince William of England, was featured in a pre-recorded clip playing on the piano an instrumental version of the Kalush Orchestra’s award-winning song “Stefania,” which she recorded at the Crimson Drawing Room at Windsor Castle earlier this month.
The clip was part of a montage by different artists, including Lloyd-Webber and Ms Banks, who performed a version of the song with the Kalush Orchestra. The series also featured last year’s runner-up Sam Ryder, Ballet Black, Bolt Strings and Joss Stone.
The instrumental version of Catherine was arranged by Joe Price and Kojo Samuel.
This year’s Eurovision is held in Liverpool, UK. Traditionally, the country that wins Eurovision hosts it the following year, but due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, the European Broadcasting Union, owner and organizer of the annual music event, found it very dangerous for Ukraine to host.
Hosting duties therefore fell to the UK with entry. Sam Ryder took second place last year and staunch allies in the war against the Russian occupation of Ukraine. Ukraine is the co-host of the show with Ukrainian rocker Julia Sanina, musician Alisha Dixon turned “Britain’s Got Talent” judge, alongside the “Ted Lasso” star. Hannah Waddingham and long-time Eurovision commentator Graham Norton.
Catherine is not the first royal to enter this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. His father-in-law, King III.
