Coco Lee Dies: Hong Kong Singer-Songwriter Turns 48


coco leeA Hong Kong-born singer and songwriter, he died at the age of 48. She had a career of nearly 30 years.

Lee’s sisters, Carol and Nancy Lee, Statement on Facebook and Instagram Coco attempted suicide at her home on Sunday. He was in a coma since then and died Wednesday at Queen Mary Hospital in Hong Kong.

“We are here with great sadness. [to] Give the most devastating news: Coco has suffered from depression for several years, but her condition has deteriorated drastically in the past few months,” the sisters said. “Even though Coco sought professional help and tried her best to fight depression, unfortunately the devil inside her prevailed.”

Educated in both Hong Kong and the US, Lee found success on the Mandopop (Mandarin pop) scene in Hong Kong in the 1990s before opening up to Cantonese and English.

“Coco is also known to work tirelessly to open a new world for Chinese singers on the international music scene, and she did her best to shine for the Chinese,” the sisters said.

Lee performed Ang Lee’s song “A Love Before Time” from the movie “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” at the 2001 Oscar, and the song was nominated for best original song.

The Chinese version of the same song earned it the award for best original film song at the 2001 Hong Kong Film Awards.

He has recorded 18 studio albums, two live albums and five compilation albums. He appeared in three films by Stanley Kwan, “No Tobacco”, Lee Xin’s “Master of Everything”, and had a small role in the 2015 film “Forever Young.” He has appeared more frequently as a judge or consultant on Mainland Chinese television, particularly on talent shows including the 2013 version of “Chinese Idol” and the 2015 version of “Dancing with the Stars.”

Lee put on a strong live performance and was rarely far from the headlines. In 2011, she married Bruce Rockowitz, a wealthy Canadian businessman, in a flamboyant wedding that was one of the most important events of the year. Rockowitz is the former CEO of Hong Kong supply chain company Li & Fung. “Although he had two step-daughters from his marriage to Rockowitz, Lee did not have children of his own,” Hong Kong Radio Television reported.
