Fifty-Fifty on Viral ‘Cupid’, US Success, and K-Pop Idols


So far, the global success of K-pop groups has mostly been achieved through massive conglomerates like YG Entertainment and HYBE. Everything changed with the independent record label Attrakt (stylized as ATTRAKT). launched an innovative campaign for newly formed girl groups fifty fifty By releasing multiple versions of their new single “Cupid” (in the style of FIFTY FIFTY), they focused on highlighting the individual talents of the members and reaching as many fans as possible.

The English version of the song dubbed “Twin Version” went nuclear on TikTok, and Fifty Fifty found themselves a global hit. This week, “Cupid” peaked at #19 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the second K-pop girl group to hit the top 20 after Blackpink.

While “Cupid” is making a historical roster, the members of Fifty Fifty are still reckoning with their extraordinary achievements. Saena, Aran, Sio, and Keena kindly agreed to answer some questions about how their runaway success changed their lives, their promotion cycles, and the K-pop groups they looked up to.

What do you think about “Cupid” being a huge international success?

saena: I am grateful to everyone who loves our music and proves that music can bring us together, regardless of our different thoughts, feelings and cultures. However, this is just the beginning and we will do our best to keep improving and bring you outstanding music.

Looking for: We are so excited and grateful that the results exceeded our expectations! We will leave no stone unturned to ensure that the group continues to meet and exceed everyone’s expectations.

Yes: We can’t thank you enough for your love and support for our music! We will continue to focus on making more great songs for all our fans out there.

Keena: We were so surprised and so grateful to hear that many of you are listening to our song! To be honest, it was overwhelming and hard to believe that all this was happening. That’s why we owe everything to our fans and are committed to creating even better music to give back the love we’ve received.

Has your life changed since “Cupid” came out?

saena: To be honest, that still holds true for me, as so many people show love to us and want to learn more about us. I feel like I’m getting used to this new reality and I’m incredibly grateful for the chance to participate and practice different promotional activities. Of course, I have a lot on my mind, but I am determined to move forward no matter what.

Looking for: What caught my attention at first was how the people around us reacted. They were really proud of us for making meaningful progress and it put a big smile on my face.

Yes: While I don’t think it’s making a big difference at this point, it’s heartening to know that my family and friends are proud of me and happy for me.

Keena: I think I’ve become a more responsible person lately and promised myself to create even more heartfelt and high quality music for “Cupid” and all of our amazing HUNNIES who have shown us so much love and support.

Which K-pop groups do you take as an example?

saena: I really admire K-pop groups in general, but Blackpink has a special place in my heart. It’s amazing how each member shines on their own and as a team. We dream of creating our own unique vibe like Blackpink and hope to one day make a mark on the K-pop scene.

Looking for: It’s hard to pick one but Girls’ Generation stands out for me because of the incredible passion and love they show on stage.

Yes: Thanks to my parents, I was introduced to 2NE1’s music from a young age and have been a fan ever since. Their distinctive style is what attracted me to them.

Keena: Even though it’s hard to pick just one, Red Velvet is the first K-pop group that comes to mind for me. Their performance videos helped me a lot while preparing for my month-end evaluation as a trainee.

What did you think when “Twin Version” went viral around the world?

Looking for: To be honest, I never expected the twin version to blow up this much! But looking back, I think it was a smart move to save the twin version, given the wide variety of languages.

Yes: While working on the twin version, our main goal was to make the “Cupid” message more understandable to as many people as possible. And we are happy to say that our strategy worked like a charm!

Are you excited to perform and promote the song in the US?

saena: This is great excitement! As soon as we get the chance, we look forward to meeting our fans and bringing our music to life in front of them.

Looking for: Definitely! Knowing that our music and shows resonate with so many people keeps us going.

Yes: We are very excited to have the opportunity to meet our fans in the USA and share our songs with them in person. Meeting fans wherever there are people who love our music and promoting Fifty Fifty is something we look forward to doing!
